Finding a passion for psychiatry

Inna Lopatyuk, Inpatient Nurse

Shortly after Inna’s career at UNMH began, a global pandemic would change things for all of us. For Inna, that only increased her desire to learn, develop and make a greater impact on patients’ lives. Taking up numerous opportunities for education and growth, Inna eventually moved into a nursing role in the field of psychiatry. In the supportive environment of a top teaching hospital and expansive health system, Inna discovered the perfect path to pursue her passion and evolve her career. How did your journey at UNM Hospital begin?

Right out of school, I started here as a nurse on the general surgery kidney transplant floor, in January 2020. As you might suspect, shortly after that, our unit turned into a COVID unit, so I became a COVID RN.

In the following years, I’ve graduated with my master’s in nursing education, and I’ve been able to teach here. I’ve since transferred into psychiatry, continuing my education by graduating with my psych NP.

What really encouraged me to start here in the first place is that, being a teaching hospital, UNMH always inspires continuing education, and I value education. And I wanted to make more of a difference in the patients’ experiences—I wanted to move from bedside nursing to treating and diagnosing and providing that brief psychotherapy.

Now that you’ve transitioned into that type of role, what’s most rewarding about working in psychiatry?

One of the reasons I love psychiatry is the resilience of the human spirit and mind. When you see these little changes in patients, how you help them become themselves again, that’s inspiring.

I feel like mental health affects every single one of us. If it’s not ourselves personally, it’s our relatives or our friends or someone we love. I don’t think there’s always a great understanding of what this is, and I just want to make that bigger impact and bigger difference. That’s really what inspired me to go into psychiatry.

A lot of nurses might argue that this is a really challenging unit, but since switching to psychiatry, I’ve found my field, something I really do enjoy. It’s been super rewarding.
