A Day in the Life of a Nurse Resident

Our Nurse Residency Program supports team members through their first year of professional nursing. The program provides continual opportunities for professional growth through personalized, comprehensive and high-quality experiences in New Mexico’s only academic medical center. We hire cohorts three times per year, usually in January, June and September.

What does it take to make the transition from student nurse to new graduate nurse? At UNMH, our residency program gives nurses like Darrell the confidence and skills to build a successful career.

Our program has been awarded Accreditation with Distinction by the ANCC. We offer residents the opportunity to work with a wide array of disciplines in a supportive, academic medical center environment.

Caring for a diverse patient population, we function as a team that’s continually working to improve patient health and nursing practice. Highlights of the residency program include:

  • Clinical area orientation
  • Monthly seminars that are a hybrid of lecture and skills
  • Experience within a multidisciplinary health care system
  • Mentorship and support from specifically trained new graduate nurse mentors
