Position Summary:
Maintains oversight of the surgical instrumentation for surgical and procedural areas of University of New Mexico Hospital. The specialist functions as the interdisciplinary liaison with external vendors and purchases and updates all instrument inventory. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. No patient care assignment.
Detailed responsibilities:
* INSTRUMENT INVENTORY - Maintain and coordinate instrument PAR levels to include standardizing where appropriate; utilize appropriate systems for reporting, ordering and delivering of materials and supplies; may purchase new and replacement instruments as necessary utilizing Lawson
* INSTRUMENTS – Enter and maintain accurate instrument/set descriptions, numbers, and pictures in applicable computer platforms (ie: Censitrac, Surginet, Medivator)
* INSTRUMENTS –Assembles and processes new instrument sets for all surgical and procedural areas, assuring instructions from the manufacturer for reprocessing are followed. Coordinates with educator/service coordinator any needed inservices
* INSTRUMENTS – Manages missing and defective instrumentation. Coordinates vendor inspections, repairs and refurbishments
* COMMUNICATION - Keep the reporting Director advised of major problem areas as they arise
* LIAISON - Serve as a liaison with vendors and hospital staff to provide information and assistance as appropriate
* PROCESS IMPROVEMENT - Identify areas of system errors, duplications, imbalances, possible procedural deficiencies and recommend solutions providing for operational adjustments for effective system operation
* ENVIRONMENT - Ensure all TJC and American Association for Medical Instrumentation Standards (AAMI) standards are followed
* RECORDS & REPORTS - Maintain records and logs; develop reports as required; identify, recommend and implement approved corrective measures (including cycle counts)
* DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops

* Sterile Processing Certification or Equivelant
* Flexible Endoscope Reprocessing Certificate
Nonessential:
* Cert from IAHCSMM or CBSPD
Physical Conditions:
Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects or people. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
