UNM Health is New Mexico's only Level I Trauma Center—we care for patients with the most complex conditions from across the state. Additionally, we are the first NIH-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and award-winning Advanced Care Stroke Center. UNM Health providers specialize in over 150 areas of medicine and employ over 7,000 professionals. Together, we receive 900,000 outpatient visits, 22,000 surgical cases and 100,000 emergency room visits each year.
Position Summary:
Responsible for the on-going development, direction, supervision and administration of the inpatient and ambulatory surgical services. Develop strategic and operational plans for area of responsibility. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical and healthcare system staff to ensure effective, results-oriented outcomes. Ensure cost effectiveness and optimal performance of personnel. Serve as the primary collaborator between department managers, Hospitals administration, and physicians. Support education and research in conjunction with Chief of Clinical Operations. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups.Detailed responsibilities:
* LEADERSHIP - Provide leadership necessary to achieve a satisfied and competent employee work environment through establishing a climate of growth and challenge, doing timely performance appraisals and developing/mentoring management and staff
* DIRECT - Direct, delegate and oversee work efforts as appropriate to ensure the highest quality and best possible delivery of service
* DIRECTION - Direct activities of the department and/or programs in accordance with Hospitals policies and objectives
* GOALS - Develop, implement and evaluate short and long range goals for assigned clinical area(s) in conjunction with hospital administration
* BUSINESS PLANS - Prepare business plans to support new programs and expansion proposals
* LIAISON - Liaison between hospital/system administration, departments, medical staff and Vizient ensuring cost-effective utilization of products, services, and processes, including but not limited to medical/surgical supplies, capital equipment and technology
* COORDINATE - Interact with all appropriate department managers to develop, coordinate, and integrate cost management programs into departmental services by assisting with program development, data collection, analysis, implementation, monitoring, and follow-up
* BUDGET - Develop and recommend department operating budget and ensure that department operates within budget
* BUDGET - Coordinate operating budget and expenditure reports; develop cost containment controls and procedures
* QUALITY SERVICE - Deliver quality service and act in a positive way with all customers to complete assigned functions; identify, recommend and implement opportunities for continuous improvement
* IMPROVEMENTS - Recommend changes for improvement in program content and in short/long-range planning in order to maintain competitiveness in the healthcare market
* PROJECTS - Ensure that the mission, values, and strategic objectives are integrated into projects and programs
* STUDIES - Conduct special studies requested by senior management including growth planning and new or improved products assessment
* COMPLIANCE - Ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies governing health care delivery and the rules of accrediting bodies by continually monitoring appropriate Hospitals' operations, programs and physical properties; initiate changes where required
* PATIENT CARE - Assume patient care assignment as needed to maintain licensure
* PROBLEM SOLVING - Investigate patient complaints and recommend solutions
* DECISION MAKING - Participate in key decision making regarding overall planning, work redesign, and staff development associated with implementing changes in patient care delivery
* INVENTORY - Oversee implant and OR supply inventory and reduce costs associated with unnecessary stock
* OPERATIONS - Develop plans and make recommendations relative to organizational and departmental operations such as organizational structure, space and layout, equipment use, work flow, and staffing
* STATUS UPDATES - Advise senior management regarding program and project status, progress, and implementation issues
* GRANTS - Assist in or develop grant applications
* GRANTS - Administer or ensure administration of approved grants and contracts in compliance with Hospitals, HSC, and regulatory mandates as applicable
* RECRUIT & RETAIN - Assist in the evaluation of recruiting efforts and retention methods
* DATA - Present valid, accurate data in a variety of formats for numerous departments and committees
* POLICY & PROCEDURE - Review and update policies and regulations, communicate the results of this work both verbally and in writing through designated channels
* DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops
* COMMITTEES AND MEETINGS - Participate in hospital/medical staff meetings and committees as required
* SERVICE - Attend and serve on professional/civic service organizations as a UNM Hospitals representative
* SUPERVISION - Develop efficient organizational structure. Supervise employees and select, terminate, train, educate, correct deficiencies, perform appraisals, issue discipline, counsel, schedule work assignments; encourage staff teamwork and growth initiatives
* PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols
* PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes
* PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk
* PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner
* PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"

Physical Conditions:
Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. May require walking or standing to a significant degree or requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or may require working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of materials is negligible.
