Position Summary:
Provide technical expertise and daily management in ophthalmologic care delivery. Supervise, assign patients to, and train Ophthalmology Techs. Perform ERG and EOG diagnostic tests. Supervise on site personnel. Perform Ophthalmic education and research. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups.

Detailed responsibilities:
* SUPERVISION - Perform all supervisory functions including annual evaluations, progress reports, disciplinary counseling, review of timecards of employees and all hiring functions of new staff, including interviewing, selecting, training, and orienting
* BUDGET - Develop and administer the division's annual budget; monitor and approve expenditures
* EDUCATION - Develop educational curricula, formulate teaching outline, determine appropriate instructional methods, conduct training, utilize adult learning principles to meet overall goals and objectives or program
* RESEARCH - Oversee and coordinate data compilation and computation; ensure quality control and compliance with protocol; review results for validity and reliability and provide initial analyses of results to researchers
* RESEARCH - Assist in all aspects of study design, implementation and administration; ensure compliance with HRRC (IRB) requirements, Federal/State regulations, contract parameters and institutional regulations, policies and guidelines
* RESEARCH - Participate in research studies according to the Institute for National Review Board standards
* BILLING - Prepare information utilized for payment of UNM Hospitals charges for component billing
* CONTRAST MEDIA - Prepare, assist, and/or administer contrast media
* DOCUMENTATION - Prepare and process patient charts and related information; maintain filing system
* QUALITY - Assist Managers to maintain quality of educational programs by reviewing evaluation summaries on a regular basis, maintaining certifications in specialty areas(s) as appropriate, and remaining current in specialty area(s) trends
* EYE CARE - Refer patients to appropriate Ophthalmology sub-specialty requiring tertiary eye care or as determined by division guidelines
* MEDICATIONS - Administer medication and monitor results, including approved IV medications according to policy, via the Five Rights; document and communicate clinical findings
* PATIENT CARE - Assist in preparation of patient care areas; assist patients in the admission, transfer and discharge process; triage patient care
* PATIENT CARE - Deliver and document patient care; ensure medical orders are carried out; perform chart audits ensuring compliance to applicable standards
* TREATMENT - Assist medical staff with complicated treatment procedures
* TREATMENT - Perform routine treatment procedures - ocular motility skills, basic contact lens evaluation, polishing lenses, slit lamp evaluation and over refraction, keratometry, tonometry, color vision testing, visual acuity, field tests, eye drops, dressing and ointment administration, pharmacology, assess vital signs; coordinate lab results, assist minor surgery, assist laser procedures, OCT, and IV eye diagnostic injections
* TESTS - Perform electro-retinogram (ERG) and electro-oculogram (EOG) diagnostic tests
* VISION TASKS - Perform manual refractometry, retinoscopy and lensometry, evaluation of contact lens specifications inclusive of base curve diameter, and other related duties
* PATIENT EDUCATION - Assist in patient education on ophthalmologic techniques and devices
* DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops
* PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols
* PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes
* PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk
* PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner
* PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"

Bilingual English, Spanish, Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, Towa, Zuni, or Navajo Multidisciplinary environment experience

Credentials:
Essential:
* CPR for Healthcare/BLS Prov or Prof Rescuers w/in 30 days
* Certified Ophthalmic Assistant

Physical Conditions:
Medium Work: Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
