Position Summary:
Manage and supervise the Hospitals Life Safety planning, systems operations and testing. Represent UNMH interests with other UNM and local Safety and Life Safety organizations. Participate in pre-construction risk assessments. Coordinate the approval of Life Safety systems installed or modified with building construction and modification project planning. Provide answers of a technical nature from contractors while construction is in progress. Manage and supervise contractors to perform and document Life Safety system testing and maintenance to ensure successful systems operation and integration. Manage and supervise the implementation of the UNMH Safety program. Assure that safety and environment of care policies and procedures are developed in accordance with the Joint Commission (TJC) standards in Environment of Care (EOC) and related CMS conditions of participation. Implement and document risk analysis surveys and incident investigations to identify and make recommendations for the correction of unsafe conditions for patients, employees and visitors. Foster a supportive environment promoting employee participation, cooperation and professional growth. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. No patient care assignment.
Detailed responsibilities:
* BUDGET - Participate in the preparation and administration of assigned budget; monitor and manage budget expenditures
* PERFORMANCE - Manage and establish performance goals; allocate resources and assess policies for direct subordinates
* DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops
* COMMITTEES AND MEETINGS - Attend the Hospital Environment of Care Committee and serve as co-chair in the absence of the committee chair; attend other meetings as required
* POLICY & PROCEDURE - Develop and recommend Safety and Life Safety policies, procedures and programs to ensure departmental and program effectiveness
* STANDARDS - Manage and implement work standards to ensure Safety, Life Safety and Fire Protection effectiveness and compliance with TJC Environment of Care and Life Safety standards in addition to local, state and federal requirements
* REPORTS - Prepare periodic reports on Safety programs and Life Safety Systems as required, report regularly on work orders and action plans, departmental operational expenses and staff-hour usage
* SAFETY PLANNING - Manage the Hospitals Safety and Life Safety planning, systems, operations, testing and maintenance
* SAFETY PLANS - Manage the approval process for Life Safety plans submitted by architects and engineers under contract to UNMH: manage the Hot Work Permit and the Above the Ceiling permit process as required; review and approve Environment of Care management plans for the organization to include Safety, Fire Safety, Hazardous Materials and Waste Management plans
* FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS - Manage the performance and documentation of Life Safety systems testing and maintenance to ensure successful systems operation, integration and compliance
* COORDINATION - Represent UNMH interests with other UNM and local Fire and Safety organizations; coordinate and approve fire systems to be installed or modified with building construction and modification project planning
* PROGRAMS - Manage the implementation or modification of Life Safety protection operations, maintenance and programs to effectively utilize staff and materials; inspect fire systems for compliance with standards, codes and regulations
* PROGRAMS - Manage the implementation and modification of Safety programs and compliance designed to manage risks in the environment of care, including but not limited to environmental tours, accident/injury investigation, hazardous materials, handling and spills, products recall process, staff training/education, exposure monitoring, defective device tracking/reporting, pre-construction risk assessments and fire drills
* MAINTENANCE & INSPECTION - Manage and coordinate Life Safety systems recurring maintenance and inspections; plan, prioritize and oversee repairs, renovation, and new construction minimizing disruption of operations; make various inspections; assess and implement Interim Life Safety measures as necessary and required
* RESOURCES - Develop, implement, administer and modify Safety and Life Safety programs and budget to maintain compliance, fire protection maintenance, installation an renovations through effective utilization of personnel and materials
* MANAGEMENT - Develop efficient organizational structure, supervise assigned employees - select, terminate, train, educate, correct deficiencies, perform appraisals, issue discipline, counsel, schedule work assignments; encourage staff teamwork and growth initiatives

* NFPA Life Safety Spec (CLSS-HC) w/in 2 years of position
* Certified Healthcare Safety Professional w/in 1 year
Physical Conditions:
Medium Work: Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
