Position Summary:
Assume primary administrative responsibility and accountability for all departments and personnel during assigned periods. Serve as on-site representative of UH administration. Serve as a resource for all departments and personnel during assigned periods. Act as liaison as necessary between physicians, staff, patients, families, UH departments and other institutions and agencies to promote and facilitate communication, problem solving, decision-making, crisis intervention, resource utilization, and conflict management. Report summary of incidents to senior management as required. Ensure adherence to hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups
Detailed responsibilities:
* GOALS - Support, promote and participate as appropriate in the development and revision of departmental and hospital goals, objectives, policies, procedures, projects and programs as assigned
* DECISIONS - Participate in decision-making through active membership in departmental and interdepartmental committees and task forces as appointed
* COMMUNICATION - Communicate accurately, effectively, and in a timely manner utilizing appropriate chain of command/channels of communication and protocols, and promote communication by others. Convey the needs and concerns of hospital staff as well as other identified problems to Administration and/or other resources as appropriate; respond to media/general public requests for information according to accepted policy; consult with and/or refer inquiries to Public Relations, as directed by policy
* REPORTING - Report incidents, actions taken and results to appropriate managers at the end of shift
* PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols
* PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes
* PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk
* PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner
* PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"
* LIAISON - Act as a resource and liaison as necessary between all UNMH stakeholders; including, but not limited to physicians, staff, patients, families, departments and other institutions and agencies; coordinate, facilitate and promote communication, problem solving, decision-making, crisis intervention, resource utilization, and conflict management
* LEADERSHIP – Provide leadership and supervision to promote patient safety and satisfaction; assist in the orientation and development of supervisory personnel; provide guidance, support, and/or direction to department supervisors and charge nurses when appropriate; participate actively and strongly support continuous quality improvement activities; provide leadership and supervision to promote employee safety and satisfaction
* ROLE MODEL - Act as a role model for all departments and personnel; adhere to UNMH policies and procedures; demonstrate UNMH Behaviors of Excellence
* PATIENT SAFETY - Respond to emergency calls for sudden, adverse developments in patients; provide clinical and/or administrative support and assistance as required to institute emergency measures
* OPERATIONS - Coordinate with Leadership, Emergency Management, and Security to initiate disaster plan; coordinate facilitation of departmental and institutional response to emergency situations
* STAFFING - Implement critical staffing guidelines to facilitate staffing during periods of critical staffing levels on nursing units with a goal to keep units open to physical capacity; reallocate staff via floating, implementing census managing as necessary to balance workload/meet patient care needs with decisions that reflect concern for the quality of care and cost effective use of resources; assist the Staffing Coordinators in completing staffing responsibilities
* RESOURCES - Identify, communicate and resolve concerns related to resource availability, allocation and quality; facilitate the procurement of required supplies and services in the absence of available support service
* COORDINATION - Collaborate with Admitting Office, Access, PALS, physicians, and patient care areas when needed to facilitate appropriate patient placement based on admitting service, diagnosis, acuity, census, and staffing considerations; collaborate with others as appropriate to authorize transfers to and from other facilities

3 years directly related experience

Credentials:

* RN in NM or as allowed by reciprocal agreement by NM
* Advanced Cardiac Life Support w/in 30 days of position
* CPR for Healthcare/BLS Prov or Prof Rescuers w/in 30 days
Physical Conditions:
Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. May require walking or standing to a significant degree or requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or may require working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of materials is negligible.
