Position Summary:
Supervise the daily operation of the HIM Department Coding Staff. Orient, train, and develop staff to meet proficient competency levels, productivity levels, and quality expectations. Plan, organize, design, implement, and monitor Coder I and/or Coder II coding initiatives to improve coding quality and reimbursement. Establish and maintain effective communication and collaboration across all components within the UNM Health Sciences system. Promote correct coding guidelines and coding initiatives, medical record automation, and standardization throughout the enterprise. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and department policies and procedures. No patient care assignment.

Detailed responsibilities:
* SUPERVISION - Develop efficient organizational structure. Supervise employees and select, terminate, train, educate, correct deficiencies, perform appraisals, issue discipline, counsel, schedule work assignments; encourage staff teamwork and growth initiatives
* EDUCATION - Coordinate training needs of staff and providers for improving the quality and accuracy of assigned responsibility. Coordinate physician education needs to improve physical documentation to meet accreditation and licensing standards for quality, timeliness, and completeness of medical record documentation
* PLANS - Develop, implement and monitor daily operations to meet quality and timeliness guidelines
* QUALITY - Conduct productivity and quality assessments for all assigned staff, monitoring accuracy, completeness, timeliness of all functions. Perform quality reviews, research, and appropriate follow up on all issues
* SUPERVISION - Monitor time sheets for all assigned personnel and complete payroll
* COMMUNICATION - Communicate Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures to supervisors and employees. Develop, implement and maintain communication through use of situational leadership documentation and employee journals. Keep Director informed of activities, needs, and problems
* COORDINATION - Coordinate the activities of the department internally and externally as needed through a variety of standing and ad hoc committees
* OPERATIONS - Ensure departmental programs run smoothly and efficiently; oversee operations, schedule staff, and expedite problem resolution
* LIAISON - Act as liaison between staff, UNMH Business/Billing Department, Managed Care Office, Admitting and outside agencies
* CUSTOMER RELATIONS - Establish and maintain good rapport and effective working relationships with patients, visitors, physicians and Hospitals employees
* DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops
* OTHER - Perform other duties as assigned
* PROCESS IMPROVEMENT- Interact with physicians and outpatient clinic managers to ensure accurate charges and coding and appropriate clinical documentation. Initiate corrective action to ensure resolution of problem areas identified. Recommend revisions to HIM management as needed
* ADMINISTRATION - Perform various administrative functions such as monitoring expenditures and preparing reports and correspondence; may participate in a variety of research projects to develop service plans; may propose changes to program policies and procedures
* TRAINING - Develop and administer efficient operating procedures for the department and provide training to ensure compliance with department standards. Maintain attendance rosters and documentation (agenda, handouts, etc.) for training programs. Provide in-services for staff to increase productivity, accuracy and document activities in the department continuing education manual
