Position Summary:The Nurse Scientist is responsible for developing, maintaining, and evaluating the nursing research and evidence-based practice (EBP) programs across UNMH. The Nurse Scientist is a change agent and a leader responsible for shaping a work environment to assure nursing practice is evidence-based and nursing knowledge is generated through research. The Nurse Scientist will foster a culture of inquiry to bridge the gap between research and practice by engaging nurses in research and EBP. The Nurse Scientist will act as a leader, mentor, and coach and provide guidance for the development of resources and infrastructure for the nursing research and EBP programs. Activities may include working with shared governance councils, developing workflows and processes to meet program needs, staying abreast of current literature on key programmatic and practice areas, identifying and leading program improvements, leading various system-level initiatives, and providing feedback and guidance for nursing and system leaders. The Nurse Scientist’s work is integrally involved and aligned with the goals of maintaining the organization’s and nursing’s strategic plans. The Nurse Scientist will maintain their own program of research. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. No patient care assignment.Accountability:
  • CONSULT - Provide consultation, mentoring, education, and guidance for nurse-led EBP projects and research studies

  • RESEARCH - Oversee clinical nursing research, research design methods, data analysis, and dissemination of findings including publications, presentations, and grant writing

  • CONSULT - Provide consultation for DNP and PhD students who are employees of UNMH to ensure projects pose minimal risk for patient, employee, and the institution

  • PROJECTS - Oversee the Project Tracker Tool for all QI and EBP projects

  • PROJECTS - Work with Nursing Quality and Safety Department on QI and EBP projects to improve patient safety and quality

  • TRAIN - Instruct classes within UNMH on EBP and QI projects

  • MENTOR - Mentor new graduate nurses with their EBP

  • MEETINGS - Attend the EBP/QI/Research Innovation and Knowledge Council and other meetings as deemed appropriate by director

  • STRATEGY - Establish a plan and strategies to guide UNMH to be a national leader in nursing research and EBP

  • INSTITUTE - Institute structures and expectations to support dissemination of nursing research and evidence-based practice projects locally, regionally, and nationally (e.g. manuscript publications, conference presentations), both of their own

  • EVALUATE - Evaluate program outcomes and role model professional nursing practice behaviors measured through improved patient outcomes, increased efficiency, decreased cost, and enhanced visibility of UNMH research and evidence-based practice

  • NETWORK - Develop and maintain professional networks within UNMH and New Mexico communities and at the regional and national level to promote professional and programmatic growth

  • COMMITTEES - Serve on and/or lead relevant system-level Nursing and/or interprofessional workgroups and committees

  • LEAD - Lead system-level EBP projects and research studies and conduct research, as the PI, within their own program of research

  • COORDINATE - Coordinate efforts with other healthcare disciplines and UW Health departments to support improvement work and inquiry-based activities, including EBP projects and research studies, to advance professional nursing, clinical nursing practice, and processes

  • Education Requirements:
  • DNP or PhD in Nursing

  • Experience Requirements:
  • 3 years directly related experience

  • Licensure/Certification Requirements:
  • Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) in State of New Mexico or as allowed by reciprocal agreement by State of New Mexico

  • Experience Requirements - Preferred:
  • Experience in developing nursing Research and EBP programming

  • Testing Requirements:
  • Tuberculin Skin Test required annually
