Position Summary:The Director of Infection Prevention and Control (IPCD) will oversee the development, implementation, management, maintenance and evaluation of the Hospital IPC program in collaboration with the Hospital Epidemiologist. This individual will work with the Hospital Epidemiologist to ensure prevention measures are in place and facilitate adherence with regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, and other recommended practices and evidence aimed at prevention of HAI’s and other communicable infectious diseases encountered in the population served. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. No patient care assignment. Accountability:
  • SUPERVISION – Provide supervision of the IPC program personnel including staff recruitment, training, retention and advancement

  • BUDGET - Develop and administer the department's annual budget; monitor and approve expenditures

  • INFECTION CONTROL - Provide consultation regarding the principles and techniques of infection control to all departments to include risk assessments

  • INFECTION CONTROL - Manage the UNMHClinical Operations IC program in accordance with current regulations and standards

  • INFECTION CONTROL - Assure safe environment for patients, personneland visitors by establishing and maintaining an effective infection control program with associated policies and procedures and education ,training for these groups

  • PROGRAM - Establish and manage an ongoing surveillance process to collect and evaluate data about infections to identify infection control gaps for either immediate intervention or ongoing process improvementchanges

  • INFECTION CONTROL - Manage communicable disease and healthcare associated infection outbreaks occurring in the hospital and clinics; coordinate management with physicians, Occupational Health, and public health authorities as appropriate

  • DATA - Collect, prepare, analyze and present valid, accurate and meaningful data in a variety of formats for numerous departments and committees

  • QUALITY- Facilitate and participate on improvement teams related to healthcare associated infection, relevant occupational health initiatives, and/or infection control processes/practices

  • PLANNING- Coordinate with the Hospital Epidemiologist to develop and execute upon a strategic plan for the IPC Program; this includes periodic review and revision of this plan and identification of specific goals and objectives to achieve continuous improvements in its effectiveness

  • QUALITY- Serve or assign an infection prevention and control designee as a representative and resource to other appropriate performance improvement teams, committees, departments, units, and personnel

  • SUPPLIES - Facilitate input into supply chain system on evaluation, selection and implementation of products and equipment for prevention of infection

  • INFECTION CONTROL- Serve with the Hospital Epidemiologist as subject matter expert on: research study design, outbreak investigation, evidence-based practice, cleaning, disinfection, sterilization methods and products and design and planning for the built environment across the System

  • INFECTION CONTROL-Demonstrate and maintain competency in IPC and healthcare epidemiology

  • REPORTING- Provide executive summaries and detailed reports on findings from investigations and improvement plans to organizational leadership as needed

  • SUPERVISION- Oversee the application of information technology and management systems and assures maintenance of these systems to support surveillance program

  • COMMITTEES - Represent the IPCD Department as a member of committees as assigned by leadership

  • PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols

  • PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes

  • PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk

  • PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner

  • PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"

  • Education Requirements:
  • Master's Degree in related discipline

  • Experience Requirements:
  • 3 years directly related experience

  • Licensure/Certification Requirements:
  • Certification in Infection Control or obtain within 12 months of position

  • Experience Requirements - Preferred:
  • Bilingual English/Spanish

  • Physical Demands Requirements:
  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. May require walking or standing to a significant degree or requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or may require working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of materials is negligible.

  • Testing Requirements:
  • Tuberculin Skin Test required annually

  • Working Conditions Requirements:
  • Med Haz: Mod exposure to chemicals, dangerous equipment and/or materials requiring basic safety precautions
